Meet Nanette M. Buchanan -- An Author with New Drama, Page after Page

Nanette M. Buchanan was born, raised and educated in Newark, New Jersey. After graduating from Arts High School in Newark she attended Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. It was then that she first set her pen to pad, written expressions of her love for poetry. She is a proud mother, wife and grandmother, now residing in Somerset, New Jersey. This dynamic author is looking forward to making writing a full time career after retiring from her current position with the State of New Jersey.

Her pad to pen accomplishments include three volumes of poetry; Thoughts, Thoughts & Reflections, and Quiet Times; five children stories and seven novels. Nanette’s first published work and debut novel was Family Secrets….Lies & Alibis.

Since then the publication of the sequel, “A Different Kind of Love” and the release of her first volume of poetry, “Thoughts” an e-book hit the market. In October of 2009, Nanette’s murder mystery, “Bruised Love” was released. It is her goal to become a successful author without limits. BPM: INTRODUCE US TO YOUR PRIMARY MESSAGE AND THE MAIN CHARACTERS

Nanette: Bruised Love holds a written message about bad relationships. Cassandra Smith, whom the story is evolved around, her mother Mary Smith, best friend Trina Slater, her lover Trevor Black, and lifelong friend Lamont Dearling are involved in relationships that are now connected and have an effect on major changes in their lives. The novel asks the question, “When love leaves a bruise, does it ever heal?”

BPM: ARE YOUR CHARACTERS FROM THE PORTRAYAL OF REAL PEOPLE?

Nanette: No, but they could be. The story is not based on any one particular but the situations could be a part of anyone’s life.

BPM: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS STORY?

Nanette: A poem I wrote years ago entitled “Ms. Smith”. The poem talks about a young woman with four children walking in her neighborhood. When she’s spotted from a distance by a neighbor, the neighbor questions what the woman has been through and how she continues on in spite of it. So many of us carry on in spite of how we feel. Cassandra depicts that force that keeps us going regardless of what others think or our emotional turmoil.

BPM: WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO PICK THE MYSTERY/SUSPENSE GENRE FOR YOUR BOOK?

Nanette: The book has a little of it all. I love a good suspenseful murder mystery. This novel deals with the emotions that when pushed will cause you to take it over the edge. The psyche of those who kill has also held my attention and in “Bruised Love” I wanted the reader to be stirred by both the psyche and the emotional connection of the characters. It’s a who-done-it murder mystery.

BPM: SHARE WITH US YOUR LATEST NEWS, AWARDS OR UPCOMING BOOK RELEASES.

Nanette: I’m really excited about the upcoming year. Last year held many rewarding experiences, plenty of researching, and learning. My plans are to incorporate it all into this year’s projects. I am looking to publish children stories as well as putting my poems in book format. My next novel is entitled “Skeletons…Beyond Closed Doors” to be released in June or July 2010.

1. Love Yourself First
If you are depressed or have low self-esteem, you need to deal with that immediately before you even think about entering the dating scene. Do not think that dating someone and searching for love is going to cure your low self-esteem or depression. It will not. In fact, getting involved with someone while you’re low on self-love may very well make you feel worse.

Don’t be so desperate to jump into a relationship, because when we are low on self-love, we sometimes have too many expectations of another, and we rely on someone else, like a man to make us feel loved. Men can sometimes notice these types of women. They are usually the ones who will go all out of their way to please a man’s every need, and will sleep with a man too quickly.

These men may very well take advantage of you, or say things that sound wonderful, but actually, they don’t really mean a word of it. • Where are you from? What is your favorite book?
I grew up in Compton, California, which gave me a very grounded perspective on life. When I mention my hometown, people automatically assume that I dodged bullets on the way to school every day. But it was nothing like that. I had two strong, hard-working parents, who still live in Compton today. The foundation they laid – faith in God, hard work and education – is responsible for who I am and what I have achieved.

I'm an avid reader who enjoys reading both commercial and literary fiction. I enjoy a broad spectrum of writers, so it's impossible for me to pick a favorite book. But if there's one book that impacted me more than any other, it would have to be Claude Brown's Manchild in the Promised Land. I can still remember stumbling across a copy of the book at my aunt's house when I was about twelve. It was the first book I remember reading that had African-American characters and I was thrilled to be reading about people who looked like me. It was also a very gritty and graphic coming of age story. I promptly "borrowed" the book without asking for permission for fear that my aunt would think I was too young to be reading such a sexually graphic book. After that, I developed an insatiable appetite for African-American fiction. That led me to James Baldwin, Maya Angelou, Richard Wright, Toni Morrison and many, many other great writers.

• How did you feel when you saw your first book on the shelf?
I still have a very vivid memory of seeing Every Reasonable Doubt on the shelf at the Barnes and Noble near my home in February 2006. I went to the store on the book's scheduled release date, not really expecting to find it. My stepson and I searched the shelves but couldn't find it. I was about to leave, but decided to, ask for it at the reception desk. To my delight, the clerk found it and led us to the book. I just stood there staring at it. So much blood, sweat and tears led me to this point. My stepson took out his cell phone and snapped a picture of me holding the book. And just as I started to started to tear up, he promptly warned me not to embarrass him by crying in the store.

• What is your process for creating a novel? Do the characters speak to you?
I will spend any where from a few weeks to as long as three months outlining a book before I sit down to write. I also mull over my story a lot. I'm thinking about it in the shower, while I'm standing in line at the grocery story, during my 45-minute commute to work. I can almost see each chapter as if it were a scene in a movie. Only after I have a completed outline do I start writing. And when I write, I go from page one to the last page without doing much editing. For me, it's psychologically motivating to complete that first draft, even if it's so bad I'd never dare show it to anyone. Once I have a finished first draft, then the real writing starts. I revise, and revise and revise some more. That process can last six months or more.

• How do you spend your free time?
Free time? What's that? Writing is how I spend my free time and I love every minute of it. I still work part-time as a lawyer and when I'm not at work, I'm usually someplace writing – be it at home, the library or the nearest Starbucks. Sometimes I write early in the morning before work, other times I'm up until one or two in the morning typing away on my laptop. My most productive writing time is when I can get away from home and lock myself in my timeshare in Palm Desert for a weekend. When I'm in that environment, the writing is non-stop. When I'm writing, I'm happy.

• Share with us your latest news and book releases.
I’m extremely excited about the upcoming release of my fourth legal thriller and first stand-alone novel, Buying Time, which goes on sale November 1st. In Buying Time, Waverly Sloan is a down-on-his-luck lawyer who comes to the aid of terminally ill people in desperate need of cash. Thrifted, Not Re-Gifted?

A funny thing happen to me at the thrift store. As I was scanning the bookshelves for the latest literary cast-offs my daughter cried out to me after unearthing a slightly worn copy of my debut novel, Soon and Very Soon-with a signature, no less. I haven't done many of these. This gave me pause. I was insulted. I felt the way I did when I found my favorite cassette tape of all time, New Edition's NE Heartbreak album in the bargain bin at Sam Goody record store. Surely, it was a mistake. The owner must have been like those clueless sad-sacks who give away one-of-a-kind artwork only to find it out its worth later on the Antique's Roadshow.

I made my daughter take me to the exact same spot where she found it. I examine the void it left on the shelf between an outdated volume of the Childcraft encyclopedia and another book as if it would give me some clue as to who could have given my baby away. I want to know this person's identity more than anything. See, my book only came out seven months ago, and we were in my neighborhood. I was sure I could crack the case. That's only a twenty-five to thirty mile radius to cover. Not exactly a case for Scotland Yard. I narrow the field of known residents that I had told about the book or sold the book to. Just when I think I have a list compiled, I think how ridiculous this whole thing is. How do you tactfully ask someone, did you happen to pitch my book out with your argyle sweater and Hammer pants? Was there no one you could personally give the book to? Ever hear of paperback swap, for goodness sake.

There had to be a logical explanation. The writer in me had me sit down at the kiddy desk set they were selling for just $7 to ponder a few possible ones. Maybe this person had a husband like mine who constantly threatens, "Don't bring another book in this house." But of course this person couldn't resist my realistic tale about two pastors that marry and combine their churches. So she took the risk and discarded the evidence immediately after the last page. Yeah, that's it.

Just when I thought I could rest a bit after a major signing at my sorority's convention at the end of this month. Yeah, maybe I'll do the Baltimore Book Festival in September, then the Capitol Book Festival. I've got a sequel to write. I can't possibly create and promote simultaneously. Soon and Very Soon will do alright. Wrong. I got a few more calls to make, connections to follow-up on and weekends to book with signings.

"Look mommy, you've got that book."

That's my six year old who has gotten good at reading the spin of books. She gets caught up on the last syllable of Terri McMillan's last name as she spots the hardback copy of A Day Late and a Dollar Short. I do own that book. I stood in line for hours while pregnant to get it signed at the crowded-to-overflowing Karibu books in the Bowie Town Center (Don't get me started. That's a whole nother lament). I would have loved to get it for $2.10. Just thirty more cents than my book was going for at the Waldorf Thrift Store.

God has a sense of humor. Just as I was about to grab my book up and discreetly pay for it at the counter like it was the last scandal sheet written about me left on the newsstand, I realized I've gotten some real good books here. I wasn't thinking, poor Audre Lorde when I picked her book of poems up and added it to my library. I've found, read and treasured, Grisham, Jakes, Gaines, and Steele.

I could take it home, wipe the red colored pencil price tag off with a bay wipe and add it to the other books packed to go to Florida-for sale for $15 a pop. Generic signature could easily be personalized on the spot. Dead wrong-maybe, maybe not. ( I put this is print so I wouldn't be tempted to do that)

I left the copy of Soon and Very Soon on the shelf next to the outdated volume of the Childcraft encyclopedia and the other book. God has plans for that book right there. My goal was that it would be widely read and that it would be a blessing to the reader. I couldn't think of a better place for that goal to be accomplished.

As we celebrate our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and those special women in our lives, let’s keep in mind that they’re worthy of our love and appreciation each and ever day.

The calendar gives mothers one special day out of the year but by God’s grace, mothers give us 365 days strong. Who makes sure the home runs smoothly; the house, no matter how big or small is kept clean, and there is always food? Yes, mother does all that and more.

Let’s celebrate these special women in our lives each and every day and remember that being a mother isn’t all about giving birth; it’s all about sacrificing a part of yourself for the benefit of another human being.

I awoke somewhat sadden that my mother would've turned eighty-three that day and she was no longer with us. Hardly two hours later the sadness was replaced and forever marked by another event.

I turned on my television in time to watch the second plane hit the World Trade Center. I thought it was a movie. When I discovered it wasn't I was completely floored. It took me several hours to discover that my youngest daughter was in another building and she, too, witnessed the destruction but was safe.

During that day and for many days after there was a common love and unity around the United States unlike I'd ever seen in lifetime. Black, white, brown, yellow, Christian, Jew, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, gay, straight, young and old, along with too many to mention, came together in common disbelief, strength, compassion and just plain-old common decency. I, like many others, went about handing out copies of the American flag and gathered items together to bring to firehouses. I attended prayer services and kept busy. Keeping still was just too painful.

What happened to us?

An historic election! What should be a celebration of just how far we've come has only exhibited just how far we have not. The World is looking at us!

Many could argue, Who cares what the rest of the World thinks about Americans? Well, I argue even if the rest of the World's opinions never mattered we, as Americans, should be ashamed.

How many more disasters must occur before we learn? I'm not going to preach. But it's so sad to read every description from a Sambo to Porch Nigg-r, as referred to Senator Obama. And the other side is no better. Whitey, Honky and Cracker are still being bandied about in response and sometimes as a lead. These are some of the most insensitive, libelous, salacious and just downright stupid and racist remarks, from various Blogs, brought to the forefront by this election. There's no more hiding racism, some are wearing it proudly, right next to their flag pin.

You can be certain that when those planes struck the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and flight 93, death and chaos had no race preference. The rain will always fall on the just and the unjust.

I pray God's continued grace and mercy upon us. And may God be to those who suffered a loss on 911 whatever they need Him to be.

If we can love God whom we have never seen, yet cannot love the ones we can, then we have missed God's entire message.

Three [3] things about yourself that others don’t know

1. Pastor Joshua McClure ran a very successful retail kitchen and manufacturing business for 29 years in Providence, RI before leaving it in 1986 to pastor Pleasant Street Baptist Church in Westerly RI.

2 Joshua built a communion table in memory of his mother and it was dedicated in
1959 at Pleasant Street Baptist Church Westerly, RI. Five years later, in 1964, a
devastating fire destroyed 80% of the church building including the altar, however, the
communion table was left undamaged.

3 I have three other books in mind. I am currently working on a book of sermons, then I
plan to write a children’s book, and also a book for young pastors and ministers.

Two [2] lessons learned in the literary world

1. A writer must not get discouraged if he or she does not find ready acceptance by a publisher for their work. Some publishers only want books of a specific genre and subject matter, so you must keep trying until you find the right one. I look at rejections as merely a reason to quickly move on to the next one.

2. I learned that the easiest part of the literary cycle is the writing. The publicity and marketing of the book require as much or more attention and detail and time for your book to be successful. I believe success is tied to how much personal effort you put in to promoting your own book.

Staying in the Game by Donna Hill

I am sitting here writing this article amazed at how long it has been since I officially became a writer. It was eighteen years ago this past June. In this age of merging publishing houses, cut backs, new genres, new voices and the explosion of self-publishing, I consider myself blessed to still be around to tell my story. I guess on the street I would be considered an O.G. (original gangsta LOL). Well, not quite, but you get my point. And because of my O.G. status, so many people have asked me what the secret is to being around for so long when there are many authors who have disappeared off the literary playing field.

These are the things that come to mind:
· You have to be in this business for the right reasons. If you got in just to make money, or to get your name on some list, your time in the game is limited.
· You must build relationships within the publishing industry, i.e., with editors, agents, publishers.
· You have to keep your finger on the pulse of the industry, be willing to expand your horizons, stretch your writing skills, i.e., teaching a class, hosting workshops, joining an anthology, presenting an out-of-the box proposal to your editor that includes other writers, take classes and read to enhance your skills.
· Stay out of the fray. Don’t get dragged down by the crab-in-the barrel mentality.
· Be willing to do for others even if you aren’t getting something out of it. Share your information.
· Build friendships with other writers. Only another writer can understand your craziness.
· Most of all respect your fans/readers. Respect their intelligence. Give them the best you can every time and always give them thanks for supporting you. They could be supporting someone else.

All those things are so important to longevity. In the long run, it’s about writing a damned good story, writing with integrity and be willing to stick it out when the going gets tough. That’s what a writer does. They write!

THEY ARE STEALING THE ELECTION!

In the past few days I've heard and read from many Obama supporters. "Oh, they're gonna steal this election (the Republicans)."
"They won't let a Black man in the White House unless he's cleaning the floors."
"He should've picked Hillary, etc."

And from several McCain supporters,

"Well, what Palin does with her family is her family. The press won't be fair so I don't care if she never answers a question about her record or stance..."

"HUH!"

Well my Sistahs and Brotha's, what has this election come to?

Let us be mindful that this is politics. It's a nasty and yes, very nasty game. If we should be concerned about anything, in my opinion, it should be the way God's Word and message has been customized and compromised.

At one point in my life I would've identified myself as a possible "Evangelical" but then they became too judgemental. I didn't fit.

On another level I thought I would've identified myself as a Conservative. Well I found out that since I truly believe in God's word where it states that "whatever you do for the least of mine...." Conservatists, in my mind, quickly discounted that rhetoric with the "I got mine and I'm going to do whatever it takes to keep mine..." I didn't fit in there either.

Now I find that I'm troubled, as I stated before, by some of the comments and conclusions that some have come to when it comes to People of God. We've been all lumped together.

With our Senator Obama and the Jeremiah Wright situation.. Many think, "Black folks secretly preach Black Liberation and they don't really like white folks."

With our Senator McCain: Some think At Saddleback church, "I'm forgiven." So now many think that Christians can go about pushing wars, hair trigger tempers, memory loss.. whatever. (Okay, I might fit in a little with the memory thingy.)

Now with the emergence of Gov. Sarah Palin comes a new dimension. And, I'm not talking about her family situation. The focus is now on her church affiliation. It is reported that her church and its Pastor tells the world that it was God that ordained the Iraq War and its consequences. Not President Bush but God. And almost immediately after her acceptance speech where she enthusiastically called out Obama on everything from his patriotism to his little-ole Community Service Activist role.

It seems that when it comes to politics many of the ten commandments are not only broken but obliterated. Not to bear false witness against your neighbor to :...placing no other God before me" has become a running joke on many blogs when it comes to this election.

But wait a minute... Didn't Bush say that God whispered to him what to do about governing?

With all of this happening it's no wonder that those on the fringe of Salvation and many deeply in it with a personal relationship with God don't know what to make of this election-government mess.

I certainly pray that people will understand that politics and religion make dangerous bedfellows.

I could say that our solution is in the Word of God... but the way this political atmosphere is going, I'm sure many would have to ask.."Which version?"

First, I'd like to thank ASA for the opportunity to support a common cause. It's important that authors come together, for the greater good, which is ... supporting literacy and our craft.

Having said all of the above....Why can't we come together?

It is important that we share news, experiences and every so often-- give a literary hug to one another. How do we do it? I'd like to give an example.

In the mid to late 1990's I was blessed to create friendships with online Guru's such as Dr. Maxine Thompson, Delores Thornton and Dr. Rosie Milligan. I mention those three although there were several others. However, for the purpose of this piece...they're the standouts.

Dr. Maxine Thompson: Without so much as a face-to-face meeting with many of the authors at that time she freely shared information. Long before there was the Dr. Maxine Thompson radio show, there was the Maxine Thompson's "Black Butterfly" newsletter. In that newsletter, she freely shared promotional ideas, marketing strategies, and most importantly, secrets to the craft of writing. Notice I said, "Free."

Delores Thornton: Delores Thornton created the first Nationwide Authors Support Group. She made it her mission to help self-published authors gain entry into libraries, Independent bookseller lists, as well as hosting online Writing Symposiums.. She encouraged authors nationwide to send their promotional items to each other for distribution wherever they went. In doing so authors on one side of the nation could have authors on the other side promote their books along with their own. And, it was done long before the rise in gasoline and air travel. It was done to handle a need for greater cross promotion and exposure. There were also large posters created with the bookcovers of many authors. Those posters were displayed at various events. "Free"

Dr. Rosie Milligan: Dr. Rosie Milligan was and is a "One Stop" for self publishing. She does everything from writing syndicated columns reflecting the current atmosphere for self-publishing as well as how to navigate the precarious industry lane to success. She's also the owner of Milligan Bookstore on Manchester Avenue in Los Angeles, CA. Every year, Dr. Milligan hosts the "Black Writers On Tour" event. It is an event where there is no stone left unturned on the self-publishing landscape. Although there is a registration fee for the event... the wealth of knowledge and contacts far exceeds the initial layout.

**Note: It was because of Dr. Milligan's generosity and need to help self-published authors that my initial "Sister Betty, God's Calling You" short story book landed a major publishing deal. Dr. Milligan took the initial book and placed it in our Ingram catalogue to ensure it's exposure.I would like to delve into more specificity in my next blog...

10 Different Great Ways to Help Your Child Become An Excited Little Reader Today!

1. Go to your local bookstore with your child as most of them have kids sections now that are bright and full of fun reading sections with minature sofa's, tables, and chairs.

2. Read with them at night right before bed. This really is a good technique for unwinding and spending quite time together before the lights go out.

3. Buy books with their favorite TV characters, Disney characters, or just anything covering something that they can relate to and like personally.

4. Attend a book fair in your neighborhood as they can walk around with you enjoying all of the activity and good weather.

5. Let your child read for smaller children - this will give them a boost of self-esteem and help them to appreciate the fact that they can actually read.

6. Award good reading habits with positive affirmations to encourage them to continue. Let them know over and over again how great you think their reading abilities are and how special this interest is.

7. Whatever your child is having a difficult time with, buy books that address their specific issue. If their shy, dealing with bullies, having a hard time sharing, etc. then get them books that show them how other children deal with the same thing.

8. Log onto the internet as there are many kid friendly sites that have stories that are actually read aloud to your child as they follow along. Try http://starfall.com as this site is amazing and super fun - children won't even realize that their learning to read because it's so kid friendly and has numerous interative activities they can enjoy.

9. Buy books based on their individual interests. If they like to help you cook in the kitchen, buy a kid friendly cook book or related cooking stories. The same applies for other things such as sports, art, etc.

10. Have a pajama party book reading night in which kids can take turns reading their favorite book as they eat their popcorn scrawled on the floor in their sleeping bags. Don't want to do a sleep over? Then you can also have a simple gathering in which the kids get to read one of their favorite books together as they eat simple snacks.

If you value reading, so will your child as they all just want to grow up and be just like Mommy and Daddy.

Reading is Fun & it's Free!Reading is fundamental for our children if they are to grow up to be educated, articulate, and analytical by nature. The natural enjoyment of reading books has to start at a young age so it becomes a life long habit that's not easily broken. As parents, we can start making an early investment in the importance of reading for our kids in order to reap all of the educational benefits that follow there after.

Not to mention that reading is a source of fun for your little one's and it can be a source of free entertainment as well. Children will learn how to use their minds and imaginations as they read about other's experiences whether fiction or nonfiction. Books help to develop their little characters as they learn about life and how to apply their thinking skills.

Start taking advantage of the free entertainment that book reading provides today. Any of the following are great ways to introduce natural reading habits into your children's lives:

1. Take Children to the local library and check out numerous free books that interest them. Various libraries let you check out up to 25 - 30 books at a time. What a good deal!

2. For books that you've already purchased, get a picnic basket and blanket for a day of relaxing and reading at your neighborhood park or beach. Of course they will want to play too, so just dedicate a small window to relaxing together with a good, fun book.

3. When driving in the car or on your next outing, play games by helping your little one's figure out what large bill boards are advertising. If you're in a restaurant, let them read the little kiddy menu on their own. They will feel super grown up as they order their own food.

4. Bargain shop at flea markets or garage sales. OK, this is not totally free but with the deals you find at these places, it's pretty close to it. One friend of mine shops at a swap meet in Orange County, Ca.. with her two daughters once a month and finds books in great condition for as little as 25 cents. An added bonus is her daughter's end up really looking forward to this monthly trip.

5. For internet fun, there's various web-sites that offer free books online such as http://kidsbooksfree.com Your child can log on and read several stories online at no cost - it's free.

Tamara Grant’s interview with author, Arlonda Abrams

TAMARA: You are an author, a radio show host. Talk to us about some of the many hats you wear.

ARLONDA: Many of the hats I wear also include, Real Estate Broker, Web Designer, Web Master, Magazine Publisher, Book Publisher, Staff Writer, and Full-Time Mother.

TAMARA: Tell us about your book Ava's Diary.

ARLONDA: Ava's Diary is a trilogy book series which takes you on an adventurous journey of a lifetime. In "Ava's Diary: From the Very Beginning--Volume 1, Series 1," I write about my life story about growing up in what many would consider "the ghetto" and my determination to escape to become "somebody"--a pediatrician.

It is in this first series that I expose that I am, indeed, the first-born of a teenage mother and a gangster, pimp, drug dealer father who was also shot multiple times and left for dead and who also served a seven-year stint in the state penitentiary. It also tells of how my parents met, who they are, as well as the backgrounds of both maternal and paternal grandparents and well as great-grandparents.

As I was also very smart, my mother, determined to give me the life that she never had as a young mother of two by the age of 19, made sure that I went away to college in hopes of my becoming a doctor. So, "Ava's Diary: The College Years--Volume 1, Series 2" tells of my journey and experiences while in college--my most lurid experiences yet; being physically abused by a former ex-boyfriend; becoming pregnant and enduring my second very emotional and physically painful abortion; being stalked by a lesbian of which I had previously humiliated while dining in the college cafeteria (we almost came to physical blows); my playa' playa' days whereby I enjoyed multiple six partners, and sooooo much more.

My final series, "Ava's Diary: From Atlantic Anguish to London Love--Volume 1, Series 3," takes you on a whimsical journey to Europe where I studied medicine abroad for one month in January, 1986. While walking the streets of London's Picadilly Circus, our eyes met and we fell in love at first sight. I'm speaking of how me and the love of my life, "Alexander," a prominent music producer in London, England, met for the first time. This book takes you on a journey that most find incredible and unbelievable. I wouldn't believe it either, if I had not lived it personally.

TAMARA: What experiences inspired Ava's Diary?

ARLONDA: My life experience inspired me to write this trilogy book series. I wanted my son to know that before I became his mother, I was the baby girl of young teenaged parents who grew up to become a young girl to a young woman to eventually gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. I needed my son as well as his children and grandchildren, for years to come, to know who we were, that we truly existed, and consequently who they are.

TAMARA: You have three versions of Ava's Diary. What encouraged you to do that?

ARLONDA: Good Question. They didn't start out that way. They started from one version of one book. But, after reading what I deemed "the final" edits, yeah right; I thought it was too racy for my parents to read. So I decided to rate the original raw versions as the "X-Series," then remove some of the graphic and explicit scenes out to create the "PG-Series." However, after reading that series, it was still too racy whereby I wouldn't want my son or minister friends to read, so I created the "G-Series." Now, everybody can enjoy these books, depending on your taste and tolerance level.

TAMARA: What have the positive and negative points been in your self- published experience?

ARLONDA: No matter what, I will always encourage all new and aspiring authors to self-publish initially. However, the key is knowing which self-publishing company to go with as there are so many of them out here. So, my experience was pretty interesting, actually. I was originally with another self-publishing company, which will remain nameless. Originally my bill would have been $500. However, with all the edits that I needed them to correct, my bill increased exponentially--to a whopping $3,000! So I decided to go with another self-publishing company; whereby I didn't have to pay any upfront cost, which matched my budget much better. Okay?!

TAMARA: Tell us about The Color Pages Magazine.

ARLONDA: The Color Pages, or TCP, as we affectionately refer to it, was initially published six years ago. I was compelled to create a quarterly-produced, Jet-sized magazine of which People of Color could be proud. Initially, we had a few haters out here in our beloved Stockton as many of the "Stocktonians" felt that I was out of line for trying to pull this community together, as I was not originally from here, but rather from the Bay Area of California. But, after our first issue, they were very impressed and decided to join and support us big time! As a "Stockton Transplant," I wanted other new Stocktonians to know who and where the players were here--City Council, Mayors, City Hall, the Barber & Beauty Shops, and so much more.

TAMARA: You have a radio show called TCP Live! Talk Radio: Unscripted & Uncut! Let the readers know about some of the show topics and why authors would want to be featured on TCP Live! Talk Radio.

ARLONDA: Yeah, the natural progression of things always amazes me. Well, the radio talk show was created as a real voice for real issues, many of which we had not discussed in our magazine, The Color Pages. So, it became that other medium. Some of the topics include Men on the Downlow, HIV, AIDS, MRSA, Light-Skinned vs. Dark-Skinned Blacks, How Africans and African-Americans truly feel about each other, Why Cheaters Cheat? and so much more. I believe that since our topics are REAL topics, then the very REAL Authors would want to come on the show to discuss their REAL books. As we have created an audience of very REAL listeners. So there's a match there. These REAL listeners will most like buy these types of books.

TAMARA: When people read your work, what do you want them to walk away with?

ARLONDA: I want my readers to walk away with a sense of REALNESS! The fact that I truly lived an interesting, colorful, and worldly life, yet and still, was smart enough to overcome many of the same issues that many other young Black women face today. They need to know that I am no better than them. And that my background is probably the same as theirs. But, to keep on pushing on. And when you make it, then you must reach back and pull up those who are facing now what you were facing then. You have to. In writing the "Ava's Diary" Series, I realized that my journey wasn't even about ME, but rather about ME helping THEM! And telling my story with realness and being unbound have made it something truly magical, especially for young women, which makes me the most proud.

Tamara:
Tell us about your book 'Divas Have Dilemmas Too'.

Asia:

It's a fiction book that addresses women's issues with a bit of humor without coming off as a self help book. Issues such as weight gain, pursuit of the American dream, balancing family with career, and self discovery are highlighted throughout. The protagonist has at least one characteristic that all women can see within themselves.

Tamara:

What time of day do you prefer to write?

Asia:

Whenever I have a free moment (which is rare) but primarily at night or weekends.

Tamara:

What are some of your writing goals for 2008?

Asia:

To finish my second novel and include some writing techniques that weren't utilized in the first novel.

Tamara:
Did you always envision yourself as a writer?

Asia:

No no no. I always smile when asked this questions because I have always imagined myself doing something technical. There was a period of time when I thought I wanted to be an astronaut. I've always enjoyed the sciences ... so I sort of stumbled on the writer in me. 5. Best and worst experiences in the literary world? Soliciting help from established authors was extremely difficult. There were many slammed doors and a lack of communication. I simply chose to get out there and create my own path instead. My best experiences were when people in the industry chose to sit me down and pour into me their learned lessons and valuable advice.

Tamara:

Are your characters or story lines based on true life experiences?

Asia:

Absolutely. I like to take a combination of things I have experienced and what others have shared with me and wrap them up into one central character. I feel this is critical because then the character(s) become more relatable.

Tamara:

What type of response has your work generated thus far?

Asia:

It's been great because I originally targeted women but I never expected men to appreciate my work. Many men enjoyed reading about what women think about and how they relate to their girlfriends. They also appreciated the fact that I did not do any male bashing (we have enough of that already). Most of the men I know have recommended the book or bought and extra to give away. My female fans truly enjoyed reading the novel because they believed that they had a friend that seemed to mirror the protagonist.

Tamara:

Any advice for aspiring writers?

Asia:

Enjoy the process and simply "do you" (slogan taken from Russell Simmons title). Don't worry about following someone else's path.... create your own.

1. What was the last book that you read? Lawd Mo Drama

2. How do you spend your free time? Being a mom, enjoying sports, and watching bad reality tv.

3. Where is your hometown? I grew up in Piscataway NJ but now I live in MD.

4. The first thing you think when you wake up in the morning? Hmmmmm, I'm not too sure I think in the morning. I operate on auto pilot because my day starts at 5AM.

5. Favorite genre of music? everything... probably rythym and blues (soulful).

6. Favorite Movie? Hope Floats

7. Do you have a day job? Yes, I am an engineer by day.

8. Where will Asia be in 5 years? Hopefully pursuing my writing career on a full time basis

9. Who are your mentors or people that you admire? My mom and Oprah (I know I know, real original right?)

10. The best advice given to you and who gave it to you? Overall my mother has always given great advice but I also remember a quote from high school.

Tamara:
Tell us about your latest book, Bare Necessities.

Hazel:
"Bare Necessities: Sensuous Tales of Passion" is my first solo project. It is a collection of short erotic stories that will be released April 1st from Xpress Yourself Publishing. The characters in each arousing story are sometimes driven to the extreme in order to achieve passion in their lives. The stories will give the reader a glimpse into more than just what goes on in the character's bedrooms but also a glimpse into their hearts.

Tamara:
How would you describe your writing style?

Hazel:
Good question. I guess I would have to say that my style is very real with no pretense. I want readers to be able to see themselves in my stories without having to filter through a lot of unnecessary fluff.

Tamara:
Where do you pull your inspiration for your writing?

Hazel:
Well, from several sources. First, I am a hopeless romantic. I look for romance and passion in everything so, writing about it seems to come naturally. Second, I am a people watcher. Whenever I'm out and about, I listen to the conversations of other people. (Laughing) I guess that's really called eaves dropping, right? But it's what I like to do. When I'm in a restaurant and I can't really hear their conversations, I watch their body language and make up my own version of what is really happening. As an only child, I was always making up stories and entertaining imaginary friends. Now, I can make up stories and get paid. (Laughing) What in the world could be better than that?

Tamara:
Tell us about your story Hopelessly Addicted in the Mocha Chocolate anthology.

Hazel:
"Hopelessly Addicted" is a story about a young woman who has had her whole world turned upside down by a man she can't have. We all know or have known a woman in this situation.

Tamara:
How do you balance your writing career with your personal life?

Hazel:
I have a VERY wonderfully supportive and loving husband. He understands that if I have spent the day writing, he'll have to cook or pick up dinner for the kids that night. He is my biggest cheerleader. I thank GOD for him everyday.

Tamara:
Anything else in the literary world that you would like to branch out into?

Hazel:
I think I would like to edit an anthology of erotica with both male and female contributors.

Tamara:
Your biggest literary influence?

Hazel:
J. California Cooper because her stories and characters come to life when I read them.

Tamara:
Something you've learned from a mistake or bad experience in the literary business?

Hazel:
So far, I haven't had a bad experience. Praise GOD!

1. What do you like to eat for breakfast? French Toast or Pecan Pancakes, bacon and a tall glass of ice cold milk from Cracker Barrel.

2. Favorite Childhood memory? Sitting on a stool in the kitchen and watching my mama bake pound cakes on Saturday nights. Because I am an only child, there was never competition to get to lick the spoon.

3. Best line from a movie? "There's nothing I like better than a good piece of ass." Steel Magnolias

4. A song title that describes you? "Beautiful, Loved and Blessed" by Prince

5. What are some of your hobbies? Watching old black and white movies on TCM, I collect All God's Children figurines and sometimes I sew.

6. What did you want to be when you grew up? (Laughing) The Bionic Woman or a lawyer.

7. Last CD you bought? Mary J. Blige "Growing Pains"

9. Favorite Sport? Shopping! Oh damn, that's not a sport. Okay then, basketball.

Right now, I'm turning one of the short stories Surrender, from "Bare Necessities" into a full length novel.

DL what inspired you to write All That Glitters?

DL Sparks:
The inspiration behind ALL THAT GLITTERS was driven strictly off of self-worth. So many women get caught up in things that aren’t right because they feel they aren’t “good enough” for anything else. And that’s just not true. I wanted to convey a message showing the readers that no matter how far off course you get, you can always get back on track.

Sometimes it takes something drastic to get people to see the light, for Santee it was her friend’s murder, but for others it may be something as small as wanting to mend a broken family tie. My best friend was abducted in July 2007 because she ended up trying to play the game that the streets of Atlanta offers, and unfortunately she lost because the streets play for keeps.

Tamara Grant: When did you first know that you wanted to publish a book?

Peron: I can remember as far back as 3rd grade after reading the first book of “The Fudge Series” by Judy Blume, saying to myself that I wanted to become an author. From what I’ve been told I that I began to teach myself to read and write at age 4 and began writing full paragraphs and stories at 6.

Tamara Grant: Your first published book was If It Ain't Right It's Wrong. How did your journey with that publishing process differ from your journey with your current publisher XYP (Xpress Yourself Publishing)?

Peron: My first publisher basically did only one thing, publish my book. With XYP, the experience has been more like being embraced as a member of a family. The guidance and freedom given has been unexplainable.

Tamara Grant: Give us a summary of your current book Pulpit Confessions.

Peron: “Pulpit Confessions” is the story of Raymond Sr., Ruth, Raymond Jr., Katherine and Anthony Miller, the leaders of The Spiritual Dynasty God's Deliverance Ministries. For the past thirty years, God's Deliverance has become a powerful spiritually based organization well known throughout the world. Bishop Raymond Miller Jr., his wife Katherine, along with his mother Ruth, younger brother Anthony and father Raymond Sr., who now suffers from dementia, are seen by the world as God's chosen family. But there are secrets within this family that could eventually destroy them all.

When Katherine becomes tired of her lonely nights without Raymond Jr. to provide the love and physical desires she craves, she finds herself attracted to Kevin Taylor, a coach at the school where she is the principal. After discovering that Raymond Jr. has been having an affair for the past two years with his assistant, Janaé Young, who is also the faux girlfriend to younger brother Anthony, her desires to be with Kevin becomes a reality.

When Janaé becomes pregnant, Raymond, who was encouraged by his mother Ruth, asks Anthony to marry her. Although Anthony has a secret attraction towards her, he reluctantly accepts Raymond's request.

Tamara Grant: What gives you inspiration for your storylines?

Peron: Very good question, yet I have no definite answer…LOL….To be honest sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and a storyline will hit me. It could be one word from a conversation that strikes something in my head. One of the current projects I’m working on came from a group counseling session at work. 5. Do you work another job, or is writing a full time career for you?

Writing is my fulltime career until I wake up and mosey my way down to the plantation Lol….I am a counselor at a facility for juvenile sex offenders. 6. What lessons have you learned about the literary business?

Whew! That could actually be a book within itself. There are so many lessons that I’ve learned from different perspectives over the past 4 years. I guess the most important thing is embracing patience. There were some things that happened quickly for me, yet there were others that seemed to take forever. There were times where I wanted to give up but there was always something inside tugging at me to continue on my journey.

Tamara Grant: What would you like people to know about you as a writer?

Peron: I would like for people to know that I write to not only entertain but to also enlighten readers on many of the sociological issues that we deal with on a daily basis. Okay, here's the fun part. 10 questions about you!

When you say Martin Luther King, a lot of us immediately think of his famous "I Have A Dream Speech." And even though we still face some degree of racism, for the most part we are living products of MLK's dream.

Gone are the days of White Only restrooms, water fountains; no more sitting at the back of the bus. Most of us are so blessed that we don't have to rely upon public transportation.

As we give thanks to God, Martin Luther King, Jr, and all of the people who fought for our civil rights--fought for us to be treated like human beings, what is your dream today for our youth of tomorrow?

Q: What inspired you to write your book, Black Success Stories Volume 1?

Zhana
A: I was inspired to write it while I was working on Success Strategies for Black People and leading courses in the Black community. So many people said to me “I can’t, I can’t”, they kept repeating this like some kind of mantra or something. They were so convinced that they could not achieve their goals, they did not even want to try. They believed that racism would stop them from achieving anything. I wanted to show examples of people who have overcome racism and achieved success in a wide range of areas. We should never believe that racism will stop us. We can achieve anything we want to if we set our minds to it.

Q: What type of feedback from others have you gotten after writing Black Success Stories Volume 1?

Zhana
A: People have really liked the book. Remember, this is just the first book in the series. Some people have asked me, ‘Are you just dealing with financial success? Because there are many people who have achieved success who are not necessarily financially wealthy’. I say, ‘Look at the book, look at the website’. I am celebrating a whole range of different kinds of successes in many fields.

Q: What do you want people to get out of your book, Black Success Stories Volume 1, and why did you choose to offer your eBooks for free?

Zhana
A: I want people to get education, inspiration and upliftment from the book.

Some of the stories are so amazing and heartwarming. Like Isaac Dweben, who started a charity to support Black people who are affected by cancer. He knew nothing about cancer, he had no training in that area. And he funded it out of his own pocket. And of course someone like the late Len Garrison, who started collecting Black memorabilia when none of the museums in the UK were collecting it, and ended up founding the Black Cultural Archives.

I particularly wanted to provide positive role models for young Black men, because so many of our young people are disaffected and ending up in prisons. The next book in the series will focus more on women.

I want people to say, ‘So and so did this, I can do what I want to do’. And in some cases, the book gives step-by-step guidance on how to achieve particular goals – for example, how to have a successful career in TV; how to pursue a journalistic career. I got five points from millionaire Rene Carayol on how to be successful in business.

I am offering the eBooks as a way for people to have a free sample of what I am offering in the books. To try before you buy, so to speak. I am also using the eBooks to help promote Black businesses and other organisations which may not be well-established as yet, but which can use the publicity to help to build their businesses. It’s a chance for me to do something for my community.

A of Mother of three beautiful daughters, Shundra, Julia and Starla and one son Julius. I was born in Tuskegee Virginia. Later moved to Washington D.C. where I graduated from Eastern Senior High School. My love and passion for writing prompted me to write my first novel
A Silent Scream.

After the subsequent death of Kenny my life became an everyday struggle. I shared my pain with who ever would listen. I felt I was alone, I felt I had to hide my pain from the world. I felt no no-one understood. Little did I know there was a lot of people who understood and care about me.

In spite of my pain and suffering everyday there was a parent crying, feeling the same way I had been for years. I prayed for her because I knew her pain, I knew what she was going through. Every time I heard on the news of a child murdered I felt the need to go and be with that parent. I knew what she needed more than anyone and that was a hug.

I 'm a momma’s girl, I'm a daddy's girl I love my momma and daddy more than anyone in the world. She was my rock, she was everything to me. When Kenny died my momma prayed and cried for me everyday. I leaned on her everyday, she would say to be everyday read the twenty third psalms. I didn't want to hear that Kenny was murdered. Nothing made sense to me anymore.

My mom passed on May 16,1996, I no longer had a rock. God removed her so that he could do the impossible in my life. As much as I believed my mom could do anything she couldn't fix my broken heart, only God could. As angry as I had been with God for allowing Kenny to die and now my mom I had to turn to him for the impossible. It was impossible for me to go without Kenny and now without my mom.

I remembered what she said to me a many days and that was to finish your book. I did and I Thank God for the encouraging words from such a powerful, loving woman in the whole world.
I am on a mission to help everyone who has walked the lonely path of the death of a child. It is the worst pain you can ever feel in your life. If you never walked this path be blessed and if you have to walk this path remember I am there for you.

Title: Secret Life

There are so many things killing the African American community. Consequences: When Love is Blind by Linda R. Herman is an eye opening novella. Sade and Andre Peters have what is the epitome of what a perfect marriage is supposed to be, she an author and he an agent for NFL players. Life changes for the high school sweethearts on their seventeenth wedding anniversary. Someone was too blind to see past wedded bliss and love.

Herman creates a woman with strength and compassion, who takes something which should have made her bitter and used it to empower others just like her. She decided to write her life story while Andre lived with his head in the clouds, pretending what was their fate, was not true.

I wish this was a longer piece, however, sometimes it is better said with less words and Linda R. Herman executed the message flawlessly. At the end of the story, there is a sneak peek of the sequel, Consequences: The Life She Chose. I cannot wait to read it. I recommend Consequences" When Love is Blind to anyone interested in a quick read with an important message.
